Sanjay Leela Bhansali & his characters!

  • Khamoshi-The Musical- Bhansali's debut film had Nana Patekar and Seema Biswas in lead and they both played deaf and mute in the film. The beautifully sketched characters perfectly brought to life a slice of the director’s own life. Khamoshi had elements from Bhansali’s life which was manifested in Helen’s character when she sells the piano. His grandmother had done something similar by selling the last silverware of the house in Zaveri Bazaar.

  • Devdas- Devdas, the character itself, was a flawed man in the eyes of the world. Bhansali has said this time and again that be it Salman in HDDCS, SRK in Devdas or Hrithik in Guzaarish, the character is actually him seeking love. The failure of Devdas in matters of love had shades of his father’s own life. The character became part of Bhansali’s film after the trauma he suffered seeing his family strive for survival. According to Bhansali it was a tribute to the half bottle his father last drank from.

  • Black- The character that Rani Mukherji portrayed in Black was something which could be dubbed as the closest that Bhansali could achieve in terms of shaping a human who can not express himself or herself. The character of Rani had shades of Bhansali’s real persona. Just as Bhansali's success graph the character too surmounts all the challenges in the end.

  • Guzaarish- Hrithik Roshan was another perfect example of SLB's character which deals with frailty, impairment and lack of expression. Ethan Mascarenhas (Hrithik Roshan) was a former magician who is a quadriplegic which means paralyzed from neck down. The man looses his virtue and decides to end his life when he demands for mercy killing. Not only this, he realizes his love for his nurse(Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and expressed his feeling after 12 years. This just shows how Bhansali's character couldn't express himself.

  • Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam- The choice of a macho man to play a meek character was a radical decision and skeptics would have surely scoffed at Bhansali's decision of giving the role of Vanraj to Ajay Ddvgn. But Ajay played to perfection the role of subdued lawyer who was simply unable to express his love be it through words or songs but his 'action' surely spoke louder.

  • Saawariya- Saawariya was the story of a loser who despite all the passion and love is simply unable to get the love of his life. It's the story of a lover whose love life is doomed.

  • Ram Leela- When we talk about characters of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's superhit 'Ram-Leela', the first thing that comes to our mind is Ram (Ranveer Singh) and Leela's (Deepika Padukone) love story. Both of them loved each other, fought for it but when it came to a positive response from their families at the end, they didn't realize it and decided to end their lives which shows their weakness and that the duo were unable to handle the circumstances which their family created for them.
