Kolkata - Dil ka bazaar hai, thoda bizarre hai!

  • It was a childhood fascination for director Dibakar Banerjee to shoot one of his films in Kolkata and 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!' gave him that opportunity. The art work of the film matched with those of Hollywood standards and Dibakar deserves full marks for recreating Kolkata of the 40s. The Lal Dighi area and Dalhousie square area of Kolkata were refurbished to bring that authentic 40s looks when air raids were a common sight and the city itself was in the grip of World War I.

  • Barfi - Anurag Basu's 'Barfi' captured the beauty of the eastern part of the country in all its glory. The movie begins with Darjeeling and ends in Kolkata. Despite the dust and dirt, Kolkata looked beautiful through Anurag's camera in 'Barfi'. Howrah bridge never looked so appealing when Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra lip synced to the 'Aashiyan' song.

  • 'Kahani' could be single handedly attributed to bringing Kolkata as a major shooting location on the radar of Indian filmmakers after lying low for long. It was after a long gap that audiences saw a film where the city itself played a major character in a film. Be it the Durga Puja Mandap of Ballygunj area or the tram depots of Nonapukur, the city presented Sujoy with ample locations which gelled with the plot of the film. Last heard, Mona Lisa guest house which is housed on a corner of Sarat Bose Road has now become a tourist spot.

  • Ali Abbas Zafar's 'Gunday' took the easy way out when it came to scouting locations for the film. The teams locked cliched locations of Dakshineshwar temple and the famed Howrah Bridge which unfortunately have been done to death in films.

  • Bullet Raja - A small but significant portion of the film was shot in Kolkata and the scenes featured both Saif Ali Khan and Sonakshi Sinha. Tigmanshu Dhulia's film too resorted to the cliches and was shot in Dalhousie area of central Kolkata and showed trams, bylanes and Saif pulling a hand rickshaw in the film.

  • Parineeta - The debut film of Vidya Balan was entirely set in Kolkata. The film showed the high profiled Park Street, the calming Ganges and Durga Puja as backdrops of the film. Director Pradeep Sircar being a Bengali himself, ensured the craft and the milieu of the Kolkata-based story was perfect, alas the cast of the film was simply unable to bring that to screen through their performance.

  • Mani Ratnam's 'Yuva' brought out the gritty side of the city of joy. The portion of the city he resorted to were dirty, stinky and raw. While Abhishek's character gelled beautifully with the dark side of Kolkata the same cannot be said about the character of Michael Mukherji that Ajay portrayed in the film.

  • In recent years, the portrayal of Kolkata in Mira Nair's 'The Namesake' was overtaken only recently by 'Kahani'. A major portion of the film is set in the United States and Kolkata only features for a very small time in the film but in those screen spaces, Mira Nair did something with Kolkata, that to this day remains etched in the minds of audiences. It was true to the the book of Jhumpa Lahiri on which the film was based. The earthy charm of the city was captured beautifully in the film.

  • Hamari Adhuri Kahani - Mohit Suri's 'Hamari Adhuri Kahani' is next in tow to feature Kolkata. The film is yet to release so it's difficult to pin point how much of Kolkata will be there in the film. Vidya in fact shot on Ashtami day last year at a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata. We only hope Mohit Suri has captured the lesser known beauty of the city.
