Amitabh Bachchan: The King Of Bollywood Holi

  • 'Rang Barse'- What cult proportion this song has assumed since its release can be summarised in few words - there are Holi songs and then there is 'Rang Barse'. The UP folk tune originally penned by his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan and voiced by his son Amitabh Bachchan is now considered to be one song without which a Holi party is incomplete. The tune, the chemistry between the stars in the song and the ambience is simply magical. 'Rang Barse' the song from Yash Chopra’s 1981 hit film 'Silsila' is one of the most remembered songs during the festival of colors and will continue to remain so.

  • The superstar had nothing much to do in this song as the entire song focussed on the Holi revelry and romance between Dharmendra and Hema Malini but Amitabh surely was smeared with gulal by the village folks. The small jig with the villagers in song took his romance with Jaya Bachchan in the film a step ahead. The aloof and the loner guy in the film certainly was enamoured by the festivity.  The song still remains one of the favourite during Holi celebration. This also marked the debut of Big B for celluloid Holi revelry. Just as the film, this song too is iconic.

  • Mr Bachchan's next Holi appearance took a really long time. The wait was worth it. This time too there was a folk song. Amitabh Bachchan made most of the opportunity given to him in the film 'Bahgban' by director Ravi Chopra and the song 'Holi Khele Raghuvira' is still hummed by even 12 years after its release. The chemistry in the song was all the more as Amitabh and Hema were appearing together on the screen after two decades.

  • What movies like Silsila and Sholay couldn't do, 'Ganga' made it possible. It was a Bhojpuri film produced by his make up man for years Deepak Sawant. The film allowed Amitabh Bachchan and wife Jaya to play Holi together on the silver screen. Despite sharing screen space with Jaya in both Silsila and Sholay, the script did not allow him to play Holi with his own wife, but in 'Ganga' the real life couple got an opportunity to smear each other with gulal.

  • Another Holi song that featured Mr Bachchan was for the film 'Dil Jo Bhi Kahe'. The film was directed by his close friend Romesh Sharma who actually wanted to make his son (who played the lead in the film) a star with this film. But with box failure both - the song and the career of the director’s son sank without a trace. The song in its feel look very similar to the one in 'Baghban' save the initial French words of the song.

  • The man who is best known for his no holds barred attitude during Holi, played Holi in a very subtle manner for Aditya Chopra's 2000 flick 'Mohabbatein' . The scene had no song and it was just SRK applying tilak on the man's forehead during Holi. The actual Holi celebration in the film was reserved for SRK who made the most in the company of Jimmy Shergill, Jugal Hansraj and Uday Chopra.

  • Now Hrishi Da's 'Namak Haraam' is a unique film in the sense that though there was a Holi song in the film, Amitabh Bachchan did not get to shake his leg. The fun as reserved for his other co-actor Rajesh Khanna and Rekha. Rajesh Khanna made the most of the opportunity that was given to him by Hrishi Da in the 1973 flick.

  • Again, movie 'Waqt- The Race Against Time', which starred Priyanka Chopra and Akshay Kumar as leads, had a sizzling Holi dance number, 'Do Me A Favour Let's Play Holi'. The shehanshah of Bollywood missed the bus again.
