Haider: Film Review

By Sheetal Tambe

Director: Vishal Bhardwaj

Star cast: Tabu, Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Kay Kay Menon

Rating: ****

What is the film all about?

Haider Meer ( Shahid Kapoor) is an adorable son who loves his father, Dr. Hilal (Narendra Jha) more then his mother, Ghazala (Tabu Khan). Hadier who is in Aligarh for his education, returns to his hometown, Kashmir after he receives the news that his father, has gone missing. Meanwhile his mother has also married his Chacha (Kay Kay Menon) who had his roving eyes on Ghazala from much before.

Haider was told that the security forces have abducted his father for shielding militants, but he later discovers that his father is no more in this world and his uncle was behind his Babuji's demise. What also shocks him more is the relationship between his mother and Chacha. Moreover he even begins to doubt that his mother is instrumental in his Dad's death.

Thereafter, Haider plans to avenge his father's death. Will he succeed to take the revenge from his father's murder or will his mother stop him? Well, watch the movie to know the answer.

What we liked.

Shot in Kashmir, Haider will be a treat to the visual senses. From snow caped mountains to the beauty of the valley, the movie offers a sneak peak into the erstwhile Kashimiri household and their culture.

Although the second half is a bit slow, you will be keen to know what happens next. However, the unexpected climax will surely stun you.

Shahid and Tabu have stolen the limelight with their brilliant performances and are no doubt the heart and soul and of the film.

Creating a niche audience for himself, Director Vishal Bhardwaj has done full justice with William Shakespeare's Hamlet with it's immense story telling and screenplay .

The songs are the soul of the film. Apart from direction, Bhardwaj has also made sure that he gives excellent music to the film. From Khul kabhi, Do Jahaan, Aaj Ke Naam and

Sukhwinder Singh’s Bismil, the music is acutely hard hitting and will be loved by people.

What we didn't like

Shraddha Kapoor (Arshia) who plays Shahid’s love interest and a journalist, seems to be lost in the film. As she has been overshadowed by Tabu and has relatively less screen time than her.

Some of the dialogues are in Urdu and may not be understood by majority of the audience.

There were ample opportunities where Shahid could have taken his revenge form his uncle.

Acting:

Tabu who made a brave decision to play a mother to Shahid, delivers an outstanding performance as Ghazala and is surely here to stay. After doing Kaminey and now Haider, Shahid has raised his bar as an actor. Hats off to his bold decision of choosing such a script and transforming himself from just an actor to a mainstream star. Although the film did not belong to Shraddha and didn't have much to do she will still be recalled as Arisha. Irrfan has a small but powerful cameo as Roohdaar and will surely an award for the best supporting actor.

Our take:

For all the Vishal Bardwaj fans and cinema lovers, this film is a must watch. For Shahid's fans don't miss this one as you will get to see his most outstanding performance till date.
