Film Review: Dhoom 3

By Sayantan Dalal

Film: Dhoom 3

Rating: ***

Director: Vijay Krishna Acharya

Starring: Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, Uday Chopra, Jackie Shroff

What it is about:

Dhoom 3 belongs to Aamir Khan and the surprises he has in store. It follows Aamir's thirst for vengeance, after his father (Jackie Shroff) commits suicide on the pressure of the villain (Western Bank of Chicago).

What's hot:

Scenic Chicago, cool bike stunts, action chase sequences and Katrina's toned legs! (well one can argue there's hardly anything for Katrina to do…but will get back to her in a moment).

Dhoom 3 gives you that feeling of a sleek Hollywood style film, thanks to good cinematography with some intricate action stunts on the streets of Chicago. The film belongs to Aamir Khan. Though his introductory scene is not as good as both Abhishek and Uday's, but Aamir soon gets back to his groove. His expressions are brilliant and he effortlessly portrays the role of a magician with a twist. And by not revealing too much I will just add, Aamir's performance is something to savour, especially when you at last understand just what he's been up to!

Abhishek and Uday will often have you in splits, specially their humorous opening scene.

A special shout out to Aamir's superbike, which helps him escape from all his heists. And am not kidding here, that bike deserves a special mention. I mean Aamir's mean machine will even put Batman's Batmoblie to shame! You have to watch it to believe it.

What's not:

The film is an amalgamation of several Hollywood style films including Christopher Nolan's Prestige. Dhoom 3 gets startlingly dull as it reaches its climax, after been stretched till almost 3 hours! The vital elements of wit and light headedness, which make magic so compelling, have been neglected by director Vijay Krishna Acharya, in favour of a desperately thrill seeking contest. The Great Indian Circus shown in the film comes across more like a musical play than anything else.

The director, eager to push the boundaries with jaw-dropping (because of the ridiculousness) bike stunts, introduces elements that compromise the coherence of the film's concept.

Furthermore, he fails to deconstruct how Aamir goes on his bank heists, only revealing his escape plan to us, which leaves us wanting more. The script has lots of loopholes and it's for the best that you tune your brain to not think logically before going into the theatre.

The battle between super thief Aamir and super cop Abhishek at the end simply drags to the point where your neck starts feeling numb.

Katrina Kaif could easily be passed on as a guest appearance, with her next to nothing role.

What to do:

Dhoom 3 doesn't live up to its hype, but surely you can bear to watch it at least once!
