Film Review: Dedh Ishqiya

By Sayantan Dalal

Film: Dedh Ishqiya

Rating: ***

Director: Abhishek Chaubey

Starring: Madhuri Dixit, Huma Qureshi, Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi

What it is about?

Running away from one of their heists, Khalujan (Naseeruddin Shah) and Babban (Arshad Warsi) found themselves entangled in love affairs with a Begum (Madhuri Dixit Nene) and her sister soulmate (Huma Qureshi).

What's good:

Khalujan and Babban are back! Naseeruddin and Arshad play grown men, but damaged and on the run and ending up finding love. Both were outstanding, engaging and enthralling. Their camaraderie will make you laugh and entertain you till the end. Arshad, especially, gives a brilliant performance which will stay in your mind for a long time. It's a shame that the talented actor doesn't get meaningful roles like that in Dedh Ishqiya.

Director Abhishek Chaubey doesn't disappoint in this sequel to Ishqiya. He kept to what he knows best and successfully created a product worthy of many accolades. He has painted a portrait of life on the margins, of broken people redeemed at least partially by love.

Madhuri Dixit Nene and Huma Qureshi give competition to Naseeruddin and Arshad in acting chops, by delivering flawless performances. For Madhuri, her comeback can't get better than Dedh Ishqiya. Her role as Begum Para felt like was written keeping her in mind. And she wows with her expressions and even shows off her outstanding dance skills!

Also watch out for the nemesis in the film played effortlessly by Vijay Raaz.

And even though you will go to watch Dedh Ishqiya expecting the same brand of humour and dialogues, you saw in Ishqiya, don't worry you won't feel a bit let down. The film deserves a special mention only for its dialogues that will make you roll over the floor laughing!

Lastly, Dedh Ishqiya is a rich way to examine the bonds and betrayals of friends.

What's not:

The pace of the film might bother you here and there, and the fact that the film could have been edited down from it's two and a half hours long run time.

If we remove the stellar cast and witty dialogues from the film, Dedh Ishqiya comes across trying a tad bit hard to surprise you with a rather ok storyline.

What to do:

A must watch for the electrifying performances from a top-tier cast and Arshad's ROFL moments!
