What it's about:

2 States follows the romantic journey of a culturally opposite couple – Arjun Kapoor (Krish) and Alia Bhatt (Ananya) and how they make their respective parents agree to an inter-caste marriage.

On its surface, the film's inter-caste marriage plot is something we have seen again and again. However, with a stripped down approach and a talented cast, debutant director Abhishek Varman creates something fresh and entirely exhilarating. The adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's novel is quite fresh, full of heart and humour while being threaded with the threat of heartbreak.

There's a unique thrill to movies that break or bend the expectations established by their genres, but it's often just as satisfying when they follow expectations beat by beat without much hiccups! Such is the case with 2 States, Abhishek Varman's highly enjoyable romantic comedy.

Even though the film lacks some of the character complexities, Varman's treatment of the material, adapted from Chetan Bhagat's novel, brings clarity to the emotional level of the characters, allowing it to excel and recognizing the limitations of the original material.

The wonder in a movie like 2 States is not necessarily in how it depicts the core relationship — read Arjun and Alia's love affair - but also how everything caught on the sidelines or glimpsed at the corners feels so real.

Coming to the lead stars, Alia easily wins over her critics with an easy smile and a friendly patter. She has this presence which you simply cannot ignore. On the other hand, Arjun Kapoor more or less has an average outing compared to Alia.
And what can we say about the mothers, played by veterans Revathy and Amrita Singh, both are simply brilliant and portrays their stereotypical roles to a tee.

The biggest problem that haunts the film is its structure. The movie goes off the rails a bit in the second half, dragging on from one scene to the next with disappointing pace.

What to do:

2 States is filled with thoughtful, telling touches and is definitely worth a watch.
