SC stays obscenity case against Mallika

Mallika Sherawat can now heave a sigh of relief, after the Supreme Court on Friday stayed the criminal proceedings pending against her in a Vadodara court, for an alleged obscene and provocative dance performance seven years ago.

The bench led by Justice B S Chauhan issued the stay order and sought a reply from the prosecution over her appeal for getting the proceedings quashed against her.

Mallika had moved to the apex court after the Gujarat High Court had dismissed her petition challenging the summoning order and initiation of criminal proceedings by a Vadodara court in 2007. The proceedings were initiated on a complaint by Narendra Tiwari, an advocate and former president of Baroda Bar Association (BBA).

Tiwari had filed the complaint on January 12, 2007 under various provisions of IPC, including sections 294 (obscene songs) and 114 (abetment of any offence). He had approached the court after Sherawat's dance performance at a hotel in Mumbai on December 31, 2006 was aired by various television channels.
