Iconic off-screen love stories

We choose the five best love stories in Hindi film industry over the years…
Dilip Kumar and Madhubala: A sad case of misunderstanding
He is hailed as the best actor Bollywood has ever produced and she is called the most beautiful actress ever. So when the two of them came together, sparks were bound to fly.  The dynamic couple first met on the sets of Jwar Bhata in 1944, but they are said to have started realizing their feelings for each other only seven years later during the shooting of the film, Taraana. Their courtship went on for six years but Madhubala’s father was totally against the relationship. It is said that he was afraid that if Madhubala gets married, she will stop working and that would mean no money coming home. Some people also said that her dad was worried about the age difference between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala. However, the couple started drifting apart because of Madhubala’s dad’s constant interference. It is said that while the couple were supposed to be going on an outdoor shoot for B.R.Chopra’s Naya Daur, Madhubala’s father forbade her from going on an outdoor shoot as he was afraid the couple’s affair will only get stronger. When Madhubala refused to travel outdoors, B.R.Chopra filed a case against her and her father and Dilip Kumar supported the producer.  This hurt Madhubala so much that it is said that she decided to end the affair. Later it is said that Dilip Kumar regretted his action and even asked Madhubala to marry him, but she turned his proposal down. It is also said that in spite of the misunderstanding and the break up, the two remained in love with each other for a long time. They even shot for the superhit Mughal-E-Azam, after the break-up.  Madhubala later married Kishore Kumar.

Raj Kapoor and Nargis: Never meant to be
He was a charming director cum actor and she was one of the most brilliant actresses of all time. It is said that he chemistry between Raj Kapoor and Nargis was evident not only on screen but also off screen. He made movies and starred in them along with her and their relationship is said to have blossomed on the sets. It seemed like a perfect relationship but there was a major hitch. Raj Kapoor was already married to Krishna Kapoor and he also had children with her.  Love struck Nargis is said to have hoped that one day they will be together but Raj had no plans of leaving his family, in spite of his love for her. Later, circumstances led to the inevitable break up of the couple.  Nargis later met the much younger, Sunil Dutt on the sets of Mother India. The story of how Sunil Dutt saved Nargis’s life from a fire on the sets is legendary now. Nargis promptly fell in love with him and called him the real love. They were happily married till Nargis succumbed to cancer.
Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman:  A tragic end
It is said that in a relationship one person always loves more than the other. In this case, it seems like the sensitive director-actor Guru Dutt was more smitten by Waheeda than vice versa. Dutt, who is considered one of the finest directors of Hindi films, is said to have fallen in love with Waheeda, even as he introduced her in his film, CID in 1956. Waheeda used to act in South Indian movies before that. Dutt was already married to the lady with the golden voice, Geeta Dutt. Geeta was an established playback singer at that time. Their marriage apparently ran into a rough patch after Geeta realised Guru Dutt’s love for Waheeda. It is said that the couple separated soon after, but they remained friends. Guru Dutt committed suicide at the age of 40.
Dharmendra and Hema Malini: Breaking the taboo
He was one of the most gorgeous of men to have entered the industry and she was beauty of dreams. It seemed almost idyllic when the two decided to fall in love with each other, reportedly on the sets of Sholay in 1975. But no love story comes without its share of difficulties…Dharmendra was married even before he entered the industry and was the father of three children. It looked like the Dharmendra-Hema Malini relationship will go the Raj Kapoor-Nargis way but apparently this couple was made of sterner stuff. Dharmendra not only decided to stick by his lady love but also give the relationship enough respect by tying the knot with her. It is said that Dharmendra approached his first wife Prakash and told her about his decision to marry Hema Malini, assuring her that he will always take care of Prakash and the children. Prakash finally agreed and Dharmendra and Hema Malini tied the knot. Hema Malini was so honest about her relationship and her marriage that not many raised a finger about this decision. The couple still remains happily married and this union resulted in two daughters, Esha and Ahana.
Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha
This was the kind of romance, story books are full of. Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha were considered a hit pair on screen and at one point they were doing about nine films together. So the inevitable happened. The couple is said to have fallen madly in love with each other. However, later Amitabh chose to marry Jaya Bachchan but even then, the couple is said to have remained in love with each other. It is said that Bachchan would often spend the nights in Rekha’s cosy home. It was Yash Chopra who dared to cash on this love story and even got the three of them, Bachchan, Jaya and Rekha together for a film, Silsila. The film was a superhit. The status of their relationship today is uncertain, but it seems like Rekha never really got out of her feelings for her man.
