Gulaab Gang: Film Review

By Sayantan Dalal

Film: Gulaab Gang

Cast: Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla

Director: Soumik Sen

Rating: ***

What it is about:

Rajjo (Madhuri Dixit) and her Gulaab gang members take it upon themselves to fight injustices and crimes against women in their village. But Rajjo faces an uphill battle to beat the conniving politician Sumitra (Juhi Chawla) and her thugs in their own game.

What's Good:

Gulaab Gang has it all, from axe wielding women, in pink saris, kicking some serious a**, to corrupt cops and equally corrupted power hungry politicians.

Through this film director Soumik Sen salutes women power. He manages to bring forward some of the hard hitting issues prevalent in the current scenario. Like rape, dowry, no electricity and water in villages and more. He even gives you solutions to those problems in the form of justified violence.

With probably two of the finest actors from their generation, Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla coming face to face, is a visual treat indeed. Both deliver flawless performances in this film about women power.

Watching Madhuri running and jumping on trucks and jeeps and showing off kung fu moves are definitely worth your money and time. But it's Juhi who steals the show between the two powerhouse. What a comeback! Juhi beautifully portrays the role of a power hungry politician. Juhi's negative characterization is going to stay with the audience for a long time. Especially her expressions her simply to die for.

Madhuri's Gulaab Gang members too do their bit, but then they hardly have much to do.

What's Not:

As I said the film has all the elements to be a hit, but Soumik refrains from exploring the depths, which results in the film losing its charm. It simply doesn't stay with you. Gulaab Gang rushes through several incidents but doesn't leave a mark behind.

The film's music too fails to impress and doesn't add to the screenplay. In fact the film would have been a much better project, if two or three songs were edited out. The second half seems to be dragged and it could have done with another 10-15 mins less.

Lastly, the film's climax disappoints, fails to keep up to the expectations and comes out little unbelievable and lame.

What to do:

Watch it for the two legends and their flawless acts.
