All bravado no substance: Dabangg 2

One thing is obvious by now. Salman Khan’s fans have no interest in the logic or the quality of the content of the film that he stars in. So Dabangg 2 need not really have any logic as a prerequisite to the film being a hit. And Dabangg 2 doesn’t disappoint on that count. It actually manages to go along without any logic or for that matter, any solid storyline to hold the movie. After all, it’s a given that Salman’s charm and charisma is enough to draw his fans into a big opening. If you are a Salman fan, there is no way you could get away without succumbing to the easy charm and charisma of the superstar. The Chulbul Pandey of Dabangg 2 is in some ways the reformed Salman Khan, no bravado in personal life anymore, but a lot of it otherwise. Chulbul Pandey from Dabangg 2 is still lattoo over his wife, and he still packs a punch when dealing with criminals, petty or otherwise.  But the Chulbul Pandey of Dabangg had more interesting shades to his character. He turned from bad to good, here he just stays good. He continues irking the bad guys, throwing punches dime a dozen and shooting people down if they so much as irritate him. But this Chulbul Pandey doesn’t appear big enough, simply because the bad men are not good enough. Well, what I mean is the bad men are evil enough to even pose a challenge to the smirking, pulling his dad’s leg in free time, seethi maroing Chulbul.

Mrs. Chulbul Pandey aka Rajjo has a meatier role (pun intended) in this one, her erotic chemistry with her husband is emphasised. But Sonakshi Sinha in the film, doesn’t do much except bat her eyelashes coyly or in mock anger as the situation demands. The best thing about the movie is that it is full of talented actors, but the bad thing is none of them are exploited well. The dialogues are flighty, casual and sometimes actually funny.

Watch it once, for Salman’s sake. I, for one, was tempted to whistle when he took that shirt off. But more than that, he seems to have enjoyed doing the role so much, that it shows not only in his performance but in the entire lot around him. And that makes you smile time and again. And that is a good enough reason to buy the ticket just once. By Shubha Shetty Saha
